Audrey Corregan: Obviously, Maybe, Definitely Birds

Photographs of wild and dangerous animals right in front of your face can be a scary. But what about the somewhat opposite situation? Here, the animals turn their backs to you, as if they don't want you to see them. These intriguing photographs by Audrey Corregan seem to show or hide something so obviously obvious, yet not exactly so obvious.

In her series Obviously, Corregan takes pictures of different species of birds, but only do so from the back. The images show a beautiful, but often dismissed angle of these feathered creatures. The back view also hints at something even more beautiful that is denied to the viewer. It might be birds' front view, but it might also be something even more captivating just in front of the birds and out of the viewer's sight.

Here is Audrey Corregan's website, with a few more obvious of birds from her series Obviously.

  1. Yeah. Wait. No. What?
All these photographers are always so clever, and they make you go "why did I not come up with that?"

  2. I've never seen pictures with only the back of birds before. Intresting idea.

  3. I bet there is a market for these photos somewhere in the greater birding community. Identification guides usually focus on photos of the front of the bird, which is not always the most useful in terms of species identification. Also, I bet that there are people who would display these at home, especially opposite a photo of the front of the same bird. Just my thoughts on the matter.

  4. I bet there is a market out there for photos such as this among the birding community. Identification guides could use photos like these to help their readers with species identification. Also, pairing these photos with shots of the front of the same bird would get people to hang them on their walls in pairs. Still, I think these shots are good just the way they are.
